Processing Technologist Position

The Northern Crops Institute (NCI) is seeking a Processing Technologist. The Processing Technologist conducts pilot-scale processing and assists with laboratory analyses on northern grown crops.  This includes efforts in milling, oil seed processing, and other analysis, as well as assisting with pasta production, extrusion, and soyfood processing.  Position will also contribute to demonstrations and training for domestic and international trade team and short course participants.  This is a non-tenured track and non-research position.  Candidate will work with industry clients in confidential manner.

Assist with pilot-scale processing and product development projects for northern grown crops. Operate pilot-scale processing and benchtop equipment (oil seed extraction, drying, milling and other processing applications) conducted at NCI.  Assist with pasta processing and twin-screw extrusion, collect and report test data as requested. Periodically communicate with clients regarding project updates, protocol and other information.  Develop project processing requirements and execute food processing projects on a professional and timely basis. Assist in the sourcing and collecting of commodity samples and ingredients, collect and package test samples for shipping. 

Properly clean and maintain laboratory work areas.  Keep laboratory and pilot plant work areas clean and maintained, perform light maintenance of laboratory and pilot plant equipment, perform routine inspections on designated equipment and perform scheduled calibrations on designated equipment. 

Under the direction of the NCI Technical Manager, assist with conducting educational programming (short courses and trade teams), crop promotion activities and assist with NCI functions as needed. Conduct demonstrations and training for trade teams and short course participants. Assist staff when NCI hosts domestic and international visitors and assist in general NCI activities as needed. Complete additional tasks as requested.


Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S or 3 years applicable work experience Food Science, Agronomy, Mechanics, Agricultural Engineering, Ag Systems Management or related degree required

  • Mechanical skills
