NCI Video Production | December 2023 Update
The NCI video production team rounded out 2023 on a high note. The big exit project, once again, took place in Grand Forks, ND, with the annual trip to the Prairie Grains Conference. For the third year in a row, the December video update will feature a segment all about the Prairie Grains filming. Read on for more.
Prairie Grains Conference 2023:
The 2023 Prairie Grains Conference was another massive success in terms of video recording. The two-day filming event took place over December 13-14, 2023. This year's attending film crew was comprised of Video Lead Kari Schiefelbein, Marketing Specialist Kali Heiberg, and Video Intern Seth Hansen.
Day one of filming began with the usual On-Farm Research Network. Multiple presenters spoke on the 2023 research projects in Minnesota, as well as one rep for the South Dakota On-Farm Research projects. Next, there was a little twist at the end of the recording day. The NCI team switched cameras to an in-room broadcast of the live demonstration going on. The feed was broadcast around the large Alerus Center Ballroom so all attendees could see the demo in excellent detail right from their seats.
Day two consisted of simultaneously recording the wheat reporting sessions and the soybean reporting sessions. The morning keynote speakers were captured as well. Lastly, a select few of the breakout sessions received some camera action.
Prairie Grains editing will be on top priority of the new year, so stay tuned for the debut of the recorded Prairie Grains sessions.
NCI On-Demand Course Video:
Though Prairie Grains is often the biggest highlight of December, the on-demand course filming doesn’t slow down. An impressive 13 videos were also produced for upcoming on-demand courses.
The majority of these videos were for the High Oleic Soy Foods Course, which debuts in January of 2024. First off, the video team works hard at enhancing Zoom recordings of remote-based presenters. Secondly, and more importantly, the team puts in great effort in recording with in-person presenters right here in the NCI auditorium. The increase in quality of the in-person recordings is substantial, and it is always preferred to utilize NCI’s professional equipment and production skills when possible.

What to Expect in 2024:
The primary video team of Kari Schiefelbein and intern Seth Hansen are returning for another year of improving and building NCI’s video portfolio. Better animation is likely in the future. And with the move to the Peltier Complex, stay tuned for some video updates on that as well. Once the team is settled in, course recap videos will be made, showing off how NCI can utilize all the new space for new and improved in–person courses.
On-demand courses are here to stay, so the need for new and updated videos for any of NCI’s multiple on-demand courses will continue. The NCI video team is looking forward to having its own recording studio in the Peltier Complex to avoid scheduling overlaps when trying to use NCI’s current shared spaces as a pop-up recording studio. Having the studio permanently structured for video production will also save countless hours of setup and teardown time that the team is currently experiencing.
The usual commodity group video partnerships are likely to continue next year, especially for groups such as MN Wheat and USSEC. New collaborations are also in the works. Keep following along for all things video-related at the Northern Crops Institute.
