NCI Video Production | June Update
We are halfway through June, and summer is finally here. Summertime is always busy-season for NCI, especially this year with in-person courses returning. To top that the rainy, cool start to this month and end of last delayed planting throughout the region. Read on for how this affected NCI’s video production this month.
NCI’s Food Grade Soybean Procurement Course:
As mentioned, NCI’s summer course schedule is back in-person and busier than ever. Last week, we kicked off our course season with the first post-pandemic international course, Food Grade Soybean Procurement.

As the courses like this one progress, the NCI video crew periodically check in with the audience and interview willing participants on their course experience so far. These interviews are conducted during built-in breaks and are extremely valuable in providing feedback on the course. The final product for this course can be found at the link below.

With more courses coming up, expect more videos as well. For a list of upcoming courses, visit our website here:

Following the Crops Videos:
On top of courses going on, the NCI team has another ongoing project. As briefly mentioned in last month’s video production update, we began planting filming. Due to the delayed plant this year, NCI was lucky to have found two farmers willing to allow the cameras to come out and film as they got the crop in the ground.
Planting footage was recorded of hard red spring wheat and corn in Aneta, ND, and Mahnomen, MN, respectively. NCI will be back soon to these locations for more filming throughout the whole growing season, including tillage, herbicide and pesticide, and more all the way until post-harvest.
Already proving a success on this endeavor is a new piece of video equipment. The newest addition is a drone with 4K video recording capabilities. The two planting shoots thus far were greatly enhanced with the use of the new drone.
The NCI video team is excited to continue exploring possibilities with the new drone, as well as capturing all the essential ground shots throughout the remainder of the growing season. Furthermore, we would like to extend a huge thank you to Scott Huso of Aneta, ND, and Dave Vipond and sons of Mahnomen, MN, for their cooperation in this project.
Check out the link below for a preview of this project. The featured video focuses on sustainable corn farming at the Vipond farm. Stay tuned for more of the planting and growing season footage and final videos to come.
Miscellaneous:
Early this month, two of NCI’s staff members assisted in video judging for North Dakota FFA right here on NDSU’s campus. Contest entries more than doubled since last year. Many great videos from talented young video producers were received. Judges Kari Schiefelbein and Krista Jansen would like to thank all the FFA directors and coordinators who worked to make the event a success, as well as a round of applause to all who competed in the video section.
Courses, video shoots, and FFA judging are far from the only events going on this summer. Later this month, NCI will be taking two groups on tours of the Duluth port in Duluth, MN. The first will be an international group attending courtesy of US Wheat – Mexico, and the second will be a domestic audience of grain/agriculture industry professionals. Of course, we will also be bringing along a video crew to capture the action.
Stay tuned for the Duluth Port video coming soon. It will take a look at the role of Duluth’s port as it relates to the export market of the region’s crops. A few tour highlights on this trip include a Vista boat cruise of the Duluth Port and the CHS terminal in Superior, WI.
Don’t forget about NCI’s Ancient Grains Conference coming up on July 20, 2022 at the Oliver Kelley Farm in Elk River, MN.

You can also view the agenda and speakers on the Ancient Grains Website as well.
We would love to see you there, and you can guarantee that you will see the NCI video crew there as well!
