NCI Webinar Recap | April 2024
The Northern Crops Institute (NCI) hosted four webinars in April of 2024. This included two NCI Market Update webinars, one Future of Feeding webinar, and one Everything Ethanol webinar. This month drew in 164 viewers either live or recorded from 15 different countries: the United States, Cambodia, Canada, China, Ecuador, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, and Zambia.
On Wednesday, April 3, 2024, the NCI Market Update: Special Edition webinar featured Javier “Beto” Carrillo Koo, Dry Bulk Forecast and Market Analysis Specialist at the Panama Canal Authority. His presentation included interesting information on the canal, which is a huge vessel elevator that elevates and lowers the vessels in its set of locks by way of gravity. The Panama Canal is actually more than just a canal too; it is a transportation hub for connectivity and logistics around the world. It has over a million total transits in its lifetime. The Panama Canal is also the only freshwater canal in the world; therefore, it depends solely on rainfall.

On Wednesday, April 17, 2024, the NCI Market Update webinar featured Allison Thompson, Commodity Broker and Market Analyst at The Money Farm. Her presentation dove into this month’s WASDE Report. A notable topic was inflation, which came into play in the spring of 2021 and is not going away, therefore affecting outside market movement and grains. Also, according to the 2023/2024 January U.S. Crop Production numbers, corn and soybeans saw substantially good yields with corn at 177 and beans at 50 bushels per acre. Future crop planted acre predictions based on earlier estimates include a potential increase for corn, a potentially similar outlook for soybeans, and a potential decrease for wheat. Overall, planted acres and crop yields are looking good.

Also on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, the Everything Ethanol webinar featured Berit Foss, Director of Sustainability at POET. Her presentation mentioned many of the sustainable practices POET is utilizing in their processing facilities. POET is the world’s largest producer of bioethanol with 34 plants and 2,200 team members. The basis of its production process utilizes decarbonizing solutions and nothing is wasted in the corn. The starch is converted to bioethanol, and the protein, fiber, and fat are converted to DDGs and other products. It was noted that Carbon Intensity is based on a complete Life Cycle Analysis, which is the measure of greenhouse gas emissions associated with producing, distributing, and consuming a fuel.
