NCI Future of Feeding Webinar Series | Featuring Walter Goldstein
Each month, NCI holds a new update in the Future of Feeding webinar series, which focuses on using innovation in the processing of animal food, the equipment being used, as well as using grains from our region for co-products.
This month’s Webinar featured Walter Goldstein, Executive Director of the Mandaamin Institute, Inc. The hour-long webinar revolved around advances in traditional corn breeding for animal and plant health. His presentation included partnership breeding method, current on-farm trials, breeding networks, and many other interesting topics.
At the beginning of the presentation, Goldstein was able to fill in viewers on a lot of background information. He explained the methodology that he and his team use to find advancements in traditional corn breeding. Walter also went into depth to explain how far they have come. Their studies began in 1989 and they have learned so much along the way. Throughout 49 seasons of breeding, the emergent evolution process showed how the yield populations were shifting. They were able to confirm that these mutations had better protein quality because they were more nitrogen efficient.
Walter was also able to show his results from these 49 seasons. He shared insight about results based on the components from 26 different site experiments. Participants were able to see the visuals with hard evidence from what he has been studying for so long. Towards the end of the presentation, Goldstein had questions for participants. He wanted to know, why all of this truly matters. He left viewers with questions to ponder as they watch his presentation. Overall, it made for a very informative yet interactive experience for our viewers.
Northern Crops Institute greatly appreciates Walter Goldstein’s involvement and input in our webinar. At NCI, we continue to work towards fulfilling our mission to support regional agriculture and value-added processing by conducting educational and technical programs that expand and maintain domestic and international markets for northern grown crops. All of this wouldn’t be possible without the innovative ideas of guest speakers like Walter Goldstein.
