NCI Hosts Hybrid Barley and Malt Quality Course
This week, the Northern Crops Institute (NCI) held it’s Barley and Malt Quality: A Field to Brewhouse Perspective hybrid course, from September 27th to September 30th. 12 participants from across the U.S. and Canada attended both in person and online to learn more about the growth of barley and the science behind malting.
This four-day course discussed a range of topics related to barley and malting. Presentation topics included: growth and development of barley, technology of malting, understanding barley and malt quality specifications, the chemistry of malt flavor and color, barley malt economics, and more.
Participants heard from industry professional speakers who shared their first-hand knowledge of barley and malting. The variety of speakers came from North Dakota State University (NDSU), University of Minnesota Twin Cities (UMN), Rahr Malting, and Busch Agricultural Resources.
Lyndon Benecke, course participant, commented on his his experience during the course and what he enjoyed.
“It was nice getting some background (and) it was nice getting some malt sensory aroma…the tours I thought were really helpful to see something large scale.”
The course consisted of a nice balance of lectures and lab demonstrations, grain and malt samples, and tours. Participants were able to take tours of Busch Agricultural Resources in Moorhead, MN and Maltwerks, in Detroit Lake, MN.
