NCI Video Production | February Update

Welcome back to another installment of the Northern Crops Institute video production update. This blog post will catch up from where it left off last in mid-January. Travel for video shoots picked up recently amidst the days of bitterly cold temperatures. This past month’s top destinations were Dilworth, MN, and Grand Forks, ND.

Small Grains Update Filming:

The first stop brought one of the communications team members to nearby Dilworth, MN, to film the Small Grains Update hosted by MN Wheat. It was a cold windy day, but fortunately the cameras warmed up once safely inside the Dilworth Convention Center.

Behind-the-scenes look at filming for the 2022 Small Grains Update in Dilworth, MN.

The recording process for a lecture-style meeting like the Small Grains Update requires filming of the presenter as well as recording the PowerPoint screen during the lecture. The editing process then entails combining the two into one video. They must be synchronized together, so the correct PowerPoint slide transitions match with the lecture.

The NCI video production crew ensures that the outcome looks professional and visually-pleasing. This is achieved by the format of placing the PowerPoint slide recording to fill a large portion of the screen, while the recorded presenter’s video is placed in a small box in the upper-right corner.

Sponsor logos, animated title screens, and the presenter’s names in lower thirds are all added visual effects NCI’s video team creates to go above and beyond a typical lecture recording. The Small Grains Update resulted in five complete videos.

Best of the Best Filming:

A similar process was put in place at the Best of the Best conference in Grand Forks, ND. Even the freezing cold temperatures and high winds remained consistent for this event. This meeting was larger than the Small Grains update, but smaller than the Prairie Grains Conference a few months ago.

Once again, this event was also hosted by MN Wheat and recorded by NCI.  The Best of the Best consisted of ten lecture presentations and five hands-on demonstrations regarding wheat and soybeans. This made the grand total 15 videos edited and produced by the NCI in approximately a week’s time.

In order to complete such a fast turnaround time for so many videos, two of NCI’s three communications team members worked on editing. It was a team effort coordinating editing styles to ensure the series had a consistent look and feel.
