NCI Video Production | July Update

The month of July 2022 will go down in NCI history as the month of video shoots. The month was packed with travel and shooting on the road. Don’t count out any in-house shoots either though. July saw a little bit of everything. The two most notable travel occasions were the two back-to-back tours of the Duluth Port. Read on for more.

Grain Procurement Course Shoot:

The first of the back-to-back Duluth port tours was part of NCI’s international grain procurement course. Above, the group tours the CHS terminal.

Before we get to Duluth trip number one in the books, there was still some filming to be done right on the NDSU campus. A few blocks from the NCI building, the video cameras traveled to NDSU’s Commodity Trading Room where the course participants were learning about commodity training from Dr. Frayne Olson.

A highlight of this lesson was the commodity trading game, where participants put their learning to the test with a live simulated commodity training game. This was the primary focus of this first video shoot for the course.

The next several video shoots took place in Duluth, MN, or its neighboring city, Superior, WI. The most notable stops included the tour of the CHS terminal, the Duluth Seaway Port Authority building, and the Port of Duluth/Superior itself. All of these stops were documented via video thanks to NCI’s communications team.

Duluth Port Tour Shoot:

Jonathon Lamb of Lake Superior Warehousing is one of the speakers who will be featured in NCI’s tour of the Duluth Port video.

If the above section was not detailed enough for you regarding the Duluth trip video shooting, you’re in luck because this post has not one, but two, dedicated sections to Duluth/Superior. This section will dive a little deeper into the trip, particularly trip #2, which occurred the following week.

While the first Duluth tour was part of one of NCI’s international courses, the second trip was dedicated to the domestic audience. This trip was a massive success.

Video work included more tour footage of the CHS terminal and the Duluth/Superior Port. Additionally, interviews were conducted with Kate Ferguson of Duluth Seaway Port Authority and Jonathon Lamb of Lake Superior Warehousing.

The two discussed anything and everything about how the region’s crops move through the port. These interviews will be featured in an exclusive video tour of the port, as it relates to the work and mission of the Northern Crops Institute.

Course Video & Miscellaneous:

NCI’s video team is always busy preparing videos for courses, especially fully online ones. One of this month’s most interesting course shoots was done in-house in NCI’s analytical lab. The topic of the video is the hot steep malting method. This will be used in NCI’s Barley to Beer course.

This shoot was one of the “fun” ones, as there was plenty of action watching NCI’s food technologist, Mary Niehaus, perform the hot steep method. The cameras were rolling from start to finish, and a final video was edited shortly after, condensing the process into an easy-to-follow guide.

NCI’s Barley to Beer course will be offered online, but there are plenty of in-person couses coming up as well. Even when in-person, NCI’s courses still require plenty of video work. For a list of upcoming courses, visit our website here:

Lastly, once again, don’t forget about NCI’s Ancient Grains Conference coming up on July 20, 2022 at the Oliver Kelley Farm in Elk River, MN.

We would love to see you there, and you can guarantee that you will see the NCI video crew there as well!
