NCI Video Production | March Update

Here is the Northern Crops Institute’s latest video production update. Last month, video production was heavily involved in multiple conferences with MN Wheat. Once editing was complete, this month was available for video brainstorming. Read on for more details on what the NCI has planned for upcoming video work.

Feed Mill Filming:

The most recent video shoot occurred on the home turf at the NCI feed mill. NCI, in partnership with ND Corn, MN Corn, and US Grains Council, are conducting a feeding and milling study on corn from four locations: Brazil, Argentina, Ukraine, and the United States.

Five tons of Ukrainian corn was unloaded at the NCI feed mill in September 2021. As the corn trials progressed, the Ukrainian corn was recently pelleted and milled in March 2022.

Earlier this year, milling and pelleting trials were conducted at the NCI feed mill with the Brazilian, Argentine, and United States corn. Both determined how much energy it took to mill and pellet the corn. In short, United States corn used less milling energy. It used more pelleting energy but created a higher quality pellet.

The next part of these trials were the hog trials at South Dakota State University. The corn from the initial three locations from above were conducted first. They were done to measure the different corn’s performance relating through the pigs’ average daily gain and average daily feed intake. Of these, the US Corn did perform just as well or better than the others. US corn trended to record higher daily gains with less daily feed intake.

This week, the milling and pelleting of the Ukrainian corn took place. Here, the NCI video team was able to capture the action and talk with SDSU Swine Specialist Bob Thaler. Take a look at the short video below to learn more about the corn from four locations trials.

Stay tuned for more video updates on these corn trials as the study draws closer to completion. NCI is proud to help tell and share this story.

Rounding out March:

The second half of this month will be picking up with more travel and video. On March 16, NCI is partnering with the US Grains Council, MN Corn, and ND Corn for a Corn Trade school in Alexandria, MN.

For more information on the Corn Trade School, visit https://www.northern-crops.com/events-calendar/corn-trade-school-031622

The communications team will be hopping on the Fargo bus with the North Dakota growers to take in the event. Of course, the cameras will come too to capture the day. The videos that will be created will help share takeaways from the day for those who could not attend. Furthermore, they will serve as promotion for upcoming trade schools and other grower education events.

Additionally, another trip east makes its way to the NCI video team calendar in the remainder of the month. Some of the team members will be traveling to the cities to attend AURI’s “New Uses Forum 2022: Exploring the Intersection of Sustainability, Innovation and Investment in Food and Agriculture” event. This will be a great opportunity for networking and capturing interviews.

Tune in to the blog post next month for an update on these events related to video work.

Miscellaneous:

As virtual and hybrid options continue to serve a purpose in NCI’s educational programming, a virtual NCI tour video idea recently surfaced.

Though video work is extremely busy this month, creating an NCI building tour video will serve a great purpose that will be relevant for the remainder of NCI’s base in the current building. This video will be able to give virtual attendees a better understanding of the labs, rooms, and equipment at the NCI.

Expect a large video update in next week’s video update blog as shooting and editing continue busier than ever in the next few weeks.
